Payment Protection Insurance Explained

Our expertise in the world of payment protection insurance has allowed us to break through the jargon and provide you with simple explanations on the subject. Let’s have a look t what PPI is all about, and how the scandal came to be.

The Beginnings of the PPI Scandal

In 2005 the Financial Services Authority (FSA) was asked to look into a number of allegations about mis-selling of PPI. Upon investigation it was found that, in fact, mis-selling of such policies was widespread. In 2007 the authorities fined many of the guilty parties, and the regulations surrounding the sale of PPI were revised. In 2009 it became illegal for banks and other lenders to sell single rate PPI policies, in 2011 the High Court ruled in agreement with the FSA. The result is the ongoing PPI claims saga.

PPI Provisions and Fines – The Story so Far

After the High Court ruling the banks were told they must pay back all fees on mis-sold policies. The lenders were forced to put aside over £13billion to pay back fees on mis sold PPI. Of this, at least £5billion is for claims against the Lloyds Banking Group. Mis-sold PPI was not restricted to the banks, for many retailers were also fined for mis selling policies. If you have been mis-sold PPI then you have a right to claim back what is yours, and you can use professionals who are experienced in claims law, or you can choose to put your claim yourself.

How Much Can I Claim?

The amount you may be awarded depends on the size, type and duration of the loan in question, and may be influenced by other factors. At the time of writing the average payout is around £3000, but we do know of one that was in excess of £50,000.

There are PPI Calculators online that can show you an estimation of your possible award, but for a better assessment you can call us on 0800 840 0792 and have a chart with one of our expert claims advisers, free of charge and with absolutely no pressure.
